A hallmark of all ISO Standards is that they
must continually be reviewed with an eye to improving their effectiveness.
The ISO 9000 Standard is on a five-year review cycle. The newest
version of the ISO 9000 Standard was released in December 2000 and
is referred to as ISO 9001:2000.
When ISO 9001:1994 and ISO 9001:2000 are compared, the most noticeable
change is the 20-clause structure abandonment of the old standard.
Rather than the 20 sections, the 2000 standard now has five sections.
The sections are identified as "requirements" and cover
the following five areas:
Quality Management System
Management Responsibility
Resource Management
Product Realization
Measurement, Analysis and Improvement
Some of the wording of the standard can be vague and confusing and
many times employees find it difficult to take the knowledge they
gain in the classroom and apply it to practice. Hence, the following
pages will attempt to explain the five sections of ISO 9001:2000
in easy-to-understand concepts.
