A hallmark of all ISO Standards is that they are continually reviewed with an eye to improving their effectiveness and assuring their relevance. The ISO 9000 family of standards is on a five-year review cycle. The newest version of the ISO 9000 Quality System Requirements Standard was released in December 2008 and is referred to as ISO 9001:2008.

When ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 9001:2008 are compared, the most noticeable change is a new emphasis on control of outsourced processes and management of customer perception and satisfaction. The major sections of the ISO standard address management of the following five operational areas:

Quality Management System
Management Responsibility
Resource Management
Product Realization
Measurement, Analysis and Improvement

Some of the wording of the standard can be vague and confusing, and many times employees find it difficult to apply the knowledge they gain in the classroom to practice. The following pages will attempt to explain the five sections of ISO 9001:2008 in easy-to-understand language.
